Creative Approaches to teaching mental health for Health and Human Development

Teachers will expand upon their knowledge with this indepth exploration of the mental health continuum, and issues impacting on wellness and illness. Presenters will discuss concepts relating to lifespan with an emphasis on adolescence, and biological, social, physical, intellectual, and emotional factors that influence wellbeing.

The workshop will include

-  Presentation by a child and adolescent psychiatrist
- Presentation of the personal experience of mental illness by an advocate from the Mental Illness Fellowship
- A guided tour of the gallery highlighting how artworks can be used to illuminate our understanding of mental health
- Explore the VCE Health and Human Development curriculum with Agatha Panetta (Toorak College)

Due to the unique and sensitive nature of the artworks at The Dax Centre, teachers who are bringing students are required to complete a teacher workshop.

Creative Approaches for Teaching Mental Health for Psychology

Teachers will expand their knowledge of mental health with this in-depth exploration of factors impacting upon wellness and illness. Presenters will discuss concepts in relation to the lifespan, stereotyping and stigma, the mental health continuum, the biopsychosocial model, depression and schizophrenia. The workshop includes:
•    Presentation by a psychiatrist focusing on the biopsychosocial model and mental illness
•    Presentation of the lived experience of mental illness, by a representative from Mental Illness Fellowship
•     A guided tour of the exhibition
•    Issues relating to the teaching of mental health in the classroom
•    A review of educational resources
•    A guided tour of the gallery highlighting highlights how artworks can be used to illuminate students’ understanding of mental health and psychological theories
•    Establishing a class environment that supports teaching mental health

Professional Development Workshop for Teachers for Art and Studio Art
 Presented in conjunction with AEV, an engaging session that will build on teachers knowledge, blending practical hands on skills and theoretical frameworks. Focusing on curriculum for Art and Studio Arts the workshop will make clear links to the Dax Centres exhibition.

Teacher Exhibition Preview 

Enjoy a drink and a guided tour of the current exhibition. The evening includes a presentation by our curator and education team, and will demonstrate how engagement with artworks can enrich and strengthen student learning in a wide range of subject areas including psychology, health and the arts. The program is presented in collaboration with AEV.
