The beauty, simplicity and naïveté of children’s artwork are undeniable, but the inner world of the child from which the works in this collection arise, is often unacknowledged or misunderstood.
The Emotional World of Children explores the emotional world of the child by showcasing a selection of artworks created by children in psychoanalytical psychotherapy sessions with pre-eminent child psychotherapist Margaret Ericksen between the 1940s and 1980s.
A variety of psychiatric disturbances are surveyed, while the importance of play, family and fairy-tales are also examined. The exhibition features artefacts and a documentary film onthe history of psychotherapy in Australia.
